Crosswinds District Recognition and Awards Event

Congratulations to Chris Meyer, David Keller, Terry LaDue, Steve Miller and Emerson Sox!

Chris Meyer:

Troop 216 would like to congratulate Chris Meyer in receiving the District Award of Merit.  This is the highest award that a District can award to an adult Scouter and is awarded for the exemplary service to scouting at the district level.  Chris is the Troop 216 Committee Chairman.  Aside from the countless hours he has given to our troop both in terms of leadership and service, Chris also serves on the Crosswinds District Committee and as the chair of both the Scouting for Food Program and the Civic Service Committee.  We thank him for his continued support and service to Troop 216.

David Keller:

David has been very active since he signed up as an ASM  four years ago.  While very versatile in his skills, David is especially strong in aquatics, having earned (and re-certified) the BSA Lifeguard award at summer camp, planned several troop  water sports outings and having served as our head lifeguard on our troop’s beach campouts.  David has also been a fixture at summer camp over the past four years, and in 2011 served as our Summer Camp Scoutmaster.   David’s thoughtful planning and meticulous attention to detail inspire confidence in the boys and in his fellow adult leaders alike.  Troop 216 is lucky to have David among its leadership ranks and thanks him for his dedication and service to the troop.

Terry LaDue:

Terry has been Troop 216’s Luminary Coordinator for the past 5 years.  He made the program extremely efficient (cutting 4 hours off our assembly time and almost 6 hours off our delivery times) and reproducible (he handed the program over to two new volunteers this year as a turnkey project).  His approach is innovative and results in full participation of troop’s scouts and families (participation is consistently over 90%).  Financially, Terry has saved the troop about 35% on materials by actively seeking out new suppliers and negotiating lower rates.  After realizing such large savings, Terry brought his methods and findings to the other units in the Crosswinds district to help them save money as well.   While scouting is certainly not all about dollars and cents, the savings and innovation Terry brought to our luminary program allowed our troop to do some things it had never done before (like renting a bus for a Washington D.C. trip and renting passenger vans to drive to a cave near Chattanooga TN).  As such, Terry’s efforts have had a very direct, very large and very positive impact on the quality of our scouting program.

Steve Miller:

Since signing up as an ASM with Troop 216, Steve has served in many roles.  He is our climbing focal point (he’s  earned his climbing instructor and lead instructor ratings), one of our  backpacking leaders (including a 2006 trip to Philmont) and  one of our regular leaders at summer camp.   When several of our scouts expressed interest in a 2010 Philmont trek,  Steve volunteered to serve as the Occoneechee contingent leader.   By leveraging his prior Philmont experience, Steve made it possible for 9 of our troop’s scouts as well as  40 others from across the council to experience a Philmont adventure!!     Steve has consistently proven himself as a dedicated leader and his willingness to serve in key leadership roles more than qualifies him as a Distinguished Leader in our troop!

Emerson Sox:

Emerson has been an ASM with Troop 216 for 3 years.  In that short time, he managed to serve on the 2010 National Jamboree staff as well as the 2011 Occoneechee contingent to the Philmont Scout Ranch.  Next summer, Emerson will be one of the leaders taking 9 of our boys to Sea Base and, as such, is currently going through SCUBA certification training.  In addition, he currently runs our first year scouting program.    His planning skills, his easygoing personality, his ever-positive attitude and his commitment to scouting and our troop make Emerson very deserving of a District Leadership Citation.
