On Sunday, October 16, 2005, Troop 216 hosted a potluck dinner to honor David Walters, who served as our Scoutmaster from November 1, 2003 to June 1, 2005.   The dinner was held at the St. Mary Magdalene school cafeteria and was attended by Mr. Walters, his wife, Therese, his daughter, Hannah, and his sons, Andrew and Nathan, both who are active Troop 216 scouts. Also in attendance were numerous adult leaders and scouts who wanted to show their appreciation for Mr. Walters’ commitment and service to the troop.

Though he was never a scout himself, Mr. Walters recalled that he recognized the value of the scouting program as his oldest son, Andrew, worked his way through the program. When his youngest son, Nathan, became involved in scouting, Mr. Walters decided to join the leadership ranks in Cub Scout Pack 213 where he served as Nathan’s Den Leader.  Soon after, he also signed up as an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 216 where Andrew was working his way toward the Eagle rank.  Shortly after Nathan bridged over to Troop 216, then-Scoutmaster Mike Rasp announced that he would be stepping down from his position.  The troop committee, having already recognized Mr. Walters’ commitment to the troop and leadership skills, approached him to succeed Mr. Rasp. It was a great day for the troop when Mr. Walters accepted this new challenge.

During the potluck dinner, several scouts recalled a pattern of foul weather on the  camping trips that Mr. Walters attended.  They concluded that whenever Mr. Walters camped, it rained (or worse)!  Mr. Walters, however, was able to point out a few flaws in the scouts’ logic.   Mark Schaefer recounted his experience as a co-leader with Mr. Walters at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico the previous year and Kevin Smit lauded Mr. Walters commitment to the troop, his organizational skills and David’s character, which made him a natural choice for the Scoutmaster position.

As tokens of the troop’s appreciation, Life Scout Joe Ristano presented Mr. Walters with a framed and signed photograph of the troop.  Committee chair Jean Ristaino presented Mr. Walters with a gift certificate to a local restaurant and Chris Meyer, from the troop committee, announced that Mr. Walters had been awarded the BSA Scoutmaster Award of Merit for his service. Finally, Mr. Meyer presented Mrs. Walters with a “Scouter’s Spouse” award to thank her for sharing so much of her husband with the troop and with Scouting.

The troop thanks Anita Becker and Karen Clemmer for organizing this event and once again thanks Mr. Walters for his dedication and service.
